My neighbor and I agree:  Our favorite prayer closet is the garden.  Neither of us can explain exactly why; it just seems that, when we’re out in the sun and breeze, peace takes over and we are free to pray.

When the weather doesn’t permit, I will use housework as a way to get into deep prayer.  Having my hands busy allows me to concentrate better.  It’s not quite the same as being out in the garden, however.  For one thing, there are more distractions indoors:  The phone, computer, animals…  Outside, I can focus on what is in front of me.

Admittedly, this won’t work for everyone.  First of all, I live near the edge of a small town.  There is some “civilized” noise:  The occasional car; a dog; people strolling by; but for the most part, it is so quiet!  The bustle of a city might not have the same effect.

Another thing that makes this oasis so pleasant is the fragrance.  I live in a high mountain valley with plenty of pine, juniper, tamarack and sage.  Add the scent of roses, petunias and other domestic plants:  The perfume is extravagant.

Everybody needs to have that special place for deep prayer.  IF it isn’t the garden, where might yours be?

About lifehelps

I am like a rich tapestry, full of texture and color. I'm a musician, composer, poet, gardener, homemaker and friend. I worked as anLCSW for 22 years; as a socialworker for 26 years all told. Before that, I was a rehabilitation teacher. My passion is to come alongside others; to empower and bless them. That is why you will find plenty of variety in my blog. Two very important things to know about me is that I am a life-long learner - An explorer and sojourner. I also belong to the Lord, before you get tweeked out: I am not saying I am "religious." There is a huge difference between all of the rules and empty practice that often gets associated with Christianity and the kind of life that comes from being in a relationship with the loving God. May you find encouragement, inspiration, insight, good ideas and a laugh or two as you read my posts and comments.
